Backflow Prevention

Providing our customers with safe drinking water is of utmost importance to us at Shasta Community Services District (SCSD). Backflow prevention is an integral part of this effort. You may have heard of this referred to as “cross contamination control”. This is a dangerous condition which can occur when water is not properly controlled and is allowed to rejoin the main pipeline after it has been pulled to the customer’s side of the meter. Poisons and contaminants, such as fertilizer, can be pulled back into the main pipeline and passed along to everyone. Please see Principals of Backflow Prevention for more detail.

With this in mind, Ordinance 02-12 was passed by the SCSD Board of Directors to comply with Title 17 of the California Code of Regulations with the purpose of protecting the public water supply. It mandates the installation and maintenance of backflow prevention devices to some locations. All new water services are required to have this device. A copy of this ordinance may be seen here for your reference.

Implementation of the Cross Connection Control Program is underway. We are in the process of identifying locations requiring a backflow prevention device. This is typically an SCSD service location having a well or tank. If you do not have an alternate water source you will not be affected by this program. If you do have an alternate water source kindly contact our office at (530) 241-6264 to schedule an evaluation or have us answer your questions.
